Hands and Fingers

Everything in the library where the work is happening in the hands: pinching, threading, turning, squeezing and steering a tool.

This is the biggest shelf here, and it runs the whole age range without a break. The line through it is the same at every age: two hands doing different jobs, with the smaller movements gradually moving out of the shoulder, into the wrist, and finally into the thumb and two fingers.

Start by the age rather than by the sub-shelf. A two year old wants a big squeeze with an obvious result, a four year old wants a thread to go somewhere, and a six year old wants a real tool and a real material. Picking one step below where you think your child is costs nothing and it is how a long run starts.

The claims on these pages are careful about one thing in particular, which is handwriting. The same muscles are involved, but the step from stronger hands to better letters is one the evidence does not let anybody take. Our guide on hands, pencils and the grip question sets out why. Do these because a child will do them for forty minutes.

The fifteen

Ordered by the age they suit best. Every line gives the setup, the play time and whether anything has to be bought.

Most of these want nothing you would have to go out for. Where something does have to be bought, it says so on the line and again at the top of its own page.
