Costs Nothing

Twenty-two activities made entirely from things that are already in the house.

Go and get five things: masking tape, a cereal box, a handful of clothes pegs, an ice cube tray and two small jugs. That is most of this shelf. Tape gives you the balance line and the floor track, the cereal box gives you the post office and the coin drop, and the pegs are Clothespin Pinching on their own.

Not one of the twenty-two asks you to buy anything, and that is not a compromise version of the library. The shelf includes the longest and best things on the site: soap carving from a bar of soap and a blunt knife, bucket stilts from two tins and two ropes, the loom from a cereal box and leftover wool.

Narrow it by what is already in reach. Jars and tubs point at posting and slotting, a jar of nuts and bolts at the screwing activity, and dried beans at the counting grid. Where an activity has a substitute that works as well, it is written on the line rather than buried.

If you would rather make the pieces properly once and keep them, make it yourself has the cutting patterns.

All twenty-two

Ordered by the age each one suits best. Sort it first by age, then by the setup column: half of these start in seconds, and the other half want one evening of cutting that then lasts for months.

Every substitute we would actually use is named on the activity page itself, in the materials list, next to the thing it replaces.
