No Mess

Twenty-nine activities that leave nothing behind but a tub of small things to tip back in.

Quickest start on the whole site is here: a handful of wooden pegs and a bowl with a firm rim, which is Clothespin Pinching, no setup at all, five to ten minutes at two. Next to it, tongs and an ice cube tray with cotton wool balls. Both of those you can hand over and walk away from.

Mess-free means something specific on these pages. Nothing wet, nothing that stains, nothing that needs a cloth afterwards. What is left at the end is small dry objects on a table, and they go back in the tub in under a minute. Two activities in the library are genuinely messy by design, and they are on the water shelf rather than this one.

Twenty-nine is too many to read. Narrow it with two questions. How old is the child, which cuts it to five or six. Then: can you leave the room, or are you staying? The line on each activity says which, and that is the difference between getting dinner cooked and sitting down for twenty minutes.

There is a third cut worth knowing about. Some of these want an evening of cutting and punching once, and then run for months with no setup at all. The post office, the sewing card and the cardboard loom are all in that group, and they are the best value on the shelf if you have a quiet evening this week.

All twenty-nine

Ordered by the age each one suits best, so find your child's age first and read four or five lines rather than twenty-nine. Each line then gives the setup time, the play time and whether you need to stay.

A good few use beans, beads or coins, which vanish into carpet. A tray or a baking sheet under the whole thing keeps the pieces on the table and saves the hoovering.
