Counting Rods

Ten rods from one unit to ten, each one exactly as long as the number it stands for, so five and five make ten in the hand before it makes ten on paper.

  • Counting Rods in their base on a plain ground
    Ten rods, in the base.
  • A child laying two rods against a third
Five and five, in the hand.
  • The ten rod held in one small hand

Every number here is off the drawing rather than off a finished toy. The one rule that is not a target is the 40 mm floor on any part, which clears the small-parts cylinder and does not move.

They stack into their own base for tidying.

Why it is shaped like that

Length is the only way a young child can see that eight is more than seven without counting it twice.

Living with it

  • The single unit rod is 30 mm and clears the small-parts cylinder.
  • The base holds all ten, so a missing rod shows at a glance and gets found.
