Water
Three activities where the water is the material: pouring it between two small jugs, squeezing it out of a sponge, and giving a measured amount of it to a growing bean.
Use less water than feels right. Half a cup is ten pours and a full jug is one pour and then it is over. Two to three centimetres in a bowl is five or six full sponges, and shallow enough that a knocked bowl is a wipe rather than a change of clothes. Small jugs matter for the same reason: light enough to lift in one hand, because a full litre jug gets carried in two and the wrist movement that is the whole activity goes with it.
Decide where the water is going before it goes there. A tray with a lip turns a flood into a puddle she can see, reach and mop, and that is what keeps the spill inside the activity instead of ending it. A baking tray or a roasting dish does the same job, a towel underneath just drinks it, and setting the bowls in an empty bath works best of all.
Cut the sponge down. A whole kitchen sponge holds more water than a two year old hand can push out, so it stays heavy and the bowl never visibly empties. Half a sponge, about 7 by 5 cm, carries around 60 ml, which is a squeeze she can finish. Then hand over the cloth at the end, because two year olds want to do the wiping.
The third one uses water by the spoonful rather than by the bowl. Two tablespoons every other day keeps the kitchen paper in a bean jar damp without the beans standing in water, and a measured amount is what makes too much and too little both visible.
The three
Ordered by the age they suit best. Each line gives the setup time, the play time and how much mess to expect.
- Sponge Squeezing Your child soaks a sponge in one bowl, carries it dripping to the other, and squeezes it out with both hands until the first bowl is empty. 2 min · 5 to 10 min · household only
- Water Pouring and Transfer Your child pours water from one small jug into another, and then back again, and again, until the table is wet. 3 min · 5 to 10 min · household only
- Plant Care and Growth Measuring Your child grows a bean from a dried one in the cupboard, waters it on a schedule that is hers, and cuts a paper strip to its height every morning. 2 min · 5 min a day, for weeks · household only
Two of these are also on the kitchen shelf, where the jug and sponge sizes are set out alongside the tongs and the trays.
